Hypothetical.
I've been having what some might call an occupational crisis lately. Not the sort where I'm not sure what I want to do with my life; rather, the kind that asks, "What would I do if simply stopped working?"
So I send that question into the void, as it were. What would you do, once you woke up the next day and realized that you didn't have to do anything?* And just as we begin this hypothetical exploration, allow me to share the most entertaining (and true) answer I've received to date:
knowing me, i'd probably panic. then be elated. then panic. then be
depressed. then feel overwhelmed. then take a nap. then eat loads of
chocolates. then be blank-brained. on day two, i'd repeat the process.
Is this the fundamental problem with the American work ideal? You tell me.
*I realize, with some trepidation, that I might be in a rather prickly position with those readers currently raising children, as this is a fairly daunting occupation in its own right. Those concerned are hereby excused from this exercise.
