Well, it was bound to happen. Google News has hit the web, and it looks...well, like a news website. Check it out, don't; the news still sucks, because people are basically sheep. Follow Me, the latest pseudo-sociological public-interest wave cries. And, we do. Witness the war on terrorism, the Iraq Offense, or the current state of the stock market, for example.

Anyone else tired of being mistaken for a member of the generally sheepish American populace? Hell, I am; I just wonder why it is that this is so. I used to think that it was because people have stopped listening. Now I'm wondering, with some chagrin, whether it's because the people who really should care have stopped talking.

I had a waking dream once in which I was attempting to protect myself from an impending terrorist attack by waving my arms wildly, screaming, "I'm not an American!" This, of course, is wrong - of course I'm an American; this is just a fact. I think I'm beginning to realize that what I should have been yelling was, "My Americanism is just a coincidence!"

I'm feeling more and more these days that I'm just plain embarrassed by what America does with itself. I'd like to think that I'm not responsible, but somehow I know I am - in fact, we're all culpable, in some fashion, for what this country does. It sucks, but there it is. The question is, of course, what do we do about it?
